Easy Taxi Driving Beyond Jakarta With Its App
Jakarta. Easy Taxi, a location-based cab-booking mobile app, aims to expand operations in Indonesia this year, following a positive initial reception from Jakarta in April.
“Since the launch, Indonesia has been one of our best markets. We definitely have plans to expand to other big cities, such as Bandung, Surabaya or Bali,” Usman Lodhi, managing director at Easy Taxi, told the Jakarta Globe on Friday.
Easy Taxi was founded roughly two years ago in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil when Tallis Gomes developed the app as a solution to the sometimes trying task of finding a cab in Brazil.
Through cooperation with local taxi companies, the app assists users in finding the closest vehicle to their location.
The app has found collaboration in Jakarta with taxi drivers from several operators, including TransCab, Putra Taksi Group and Gamya, according to Lodhi.
After a successful launch in Latin America, Easy Taxi now operates in 162 cities across four continents, including cities in Singapore, Malaysia and South Korea.
Lodhi said the app currently has 8 million downloads, with users opening the app multiple times throughout the day.
Easy Taxi’s swift success in Indonesia can be attributed to the country’s fast-growing smartphone use, Lodhi said.
But the Brazilian app is not the only E-hailing start-up looking to tap into Indonesia’s rising purchase power and increasingly tech-savvy population.
Grab Taxi, which was founded by Harvard students and launched from Malaysia, functions similarly to Easy Taxi, and is already a leading Southeast Asia cab app. Uber, the San Fransisco-based car-sharing app, also launched operations in Jakarta earlier this year. Despite the considerable competition, Lodhi said Easy Taxi stands out for its emphasis on service.
“Easy Taxi has two client bases — app users and taxi drivers,” Lodhi said.
He added that the app is designed to ensure an easy, safe, and comfortable taxi experience for the app users, as well as to increase the livelihood of taxi drivers through considerable incentives, classroom-style training sessions, and in some cases, even providing the cab drivers with smartphones.
“Drivers who work with Easy Taxi gets up to 50 percent more rides compared with those who use the traditional ways of finding customers,” he added.
With the option of pressing a “Request Taxi” button instead of standing in the street with an outstretched arm, finding a cab in Jakarta and beyond will never have been easier.
